Hijri to Gregorian date converter, and back
Pick the direction and enter the date: the matching date and the weekday appear at once. The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the Hijri calendar used for official dates in Saudi Arabia, and covers 1356 to 1500 AH (1937 to 2077 CE).
Calculator
- Hijri date
- 1 Ramadan 1445 AH
- Gregorian date
- 11 March 2024 CE 2024-03-11
- Weekday
- Monday
Method, step by step
- Gregorian to Hijri: the day is read from the Umm al-Qura table your browser itself carries (the islamic-umalqura calendar of its Intl data), which gives the Hijri year, month and day.
- Hijri to Gregorian: the Gregorian day is first estimated with the arithmetic Islamic calendar, then that estimate and the three days either side are tried until the reverse conversion matches the Hijri date exactly.
- A month has 29 or 30 days as the Umm al-Qura table says, so the 30th of a 29-day month is reported as a day that does not exist.
Worked example
Dates converted by the same converter:
- 11 March 2024 CE = 1 Ramadan 1445 AH (Monday)
- 5 October 2026 CE = 24 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH (Monday)
- 1 Ramadan 1447 AH = 18 February 2026 CE (Wednesday)
- 1 Muharram 1448 AH = 16 June 2026 CE (Tuesday)
Assumptions and default ratios
- The conversion is calculated on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Months that start on a moon sighting, such as Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah, may differ from it by a day, and other countries may follow their own sighting or calendar, so the official announcement governs official dates.
- The supported range is 1356 to 1500 AH; dates outside it are not converted.
- A date is read as a whole day with no time or time zone, so the result does not change with your device's clock.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?
A precomputed Hijri calendar in which each month's start is set by astronomical rules, used for official dates in Saudi Arabia. It is the calendar this converter uses.
Why is a Hijri date sometimes one day off a printed calendar or an official announcement?
Some months officially start on a moon sighting, which can differ from the calculation by a day, and countries follow different calendars. The result here is Umm al-Qura; check the official announcement for contract and religious dates.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
Twelve months of 29 or 30 days each, so 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.
