Paint quantity calculator
Paint in litres = area × coats ÷ coverage per litre (by default 8 m² per litre per coat). The calculator then divides by the bucket size (9 L) and rounds up.
Calculator
- Paint
- 150 L
- Buckets
- 17 buckets (9 L)
Method, step by step
- Work out the net painted area in m² for walls and ceilings, minus openings.
- Multiply the area by the number of coats and divide by the coverage to get litres.
- Divide the litres by the bucket size and round up to get buckets.
Worked example
Inputs
- Painted area (m²): 400
- Number of coats: 3
- Litres = area × coats ÷ coverage = 400 × 3 ÷ 8 = 150 L, 150 L rounded up.
- Buckets = 150 ÷ 9 = 17, rounded up.
Result
- Paint
- 150 L
- Buckets
- 17 buckets (9 L)
Assumptions and default ratios
| Ratio | Default value |
|---|---|
| Coverage per litre per coat | 8 m²/L |
| Bucket size | 9 L/bucket |
- Coverage depends on the paint, the surface absorption and thinning; take it from the product data and change it under the ratios.
- Putty, sealer and waste are not included.
