Tile quantity calculator
Tiles = floor area ÷ area of one tile × (1 + waste), rounded up. The calculator then gives the boxes by dividing the tiled area by the area per box (by default 1.44 m²).
Calculator
- Tiles
- 357 tiles
- Boxes
- 90 boxes
- Area including waste
- 128.4 m²
Method, step by step
- Work out the tile area in m²: (size in cm ÷ 100)².
- Divide the floor area by the tile area, multiply by (1 + waste ÷ 100) and round up.
- Multiply the tile count by the tile area, divide by the area per box and round up.
Worked example
Inputs
- Floor area (m²): 120
- Tile size (cm): 60
- Waste %: 7
- Tile area = (60 ÷ 100)² = 0.36 m².
- Tiles = 120 ÷ 0.36 × (1 + 7 ÷ 100) = 357, rounded up.
- Boxes = 357 × 0.36 ÷ 1.44 = 90, rounded up.
Result
- Tiles
- 357 tiles
- Boxes
- 90 boxes
- Area including waste
- 128.4 m²
Assumptions and default ratios
| Ratio | Default value |
|---|---|
| Area per tile box | 1.44 m²/box |
- The calculator is for square tiles of one size. For rectangular tiles use the equivalent area or the box area printed on the pack.
- Box area varies by size and manufacturer; take it from the product. Mortar, adhesive and skirting are not included.
Frequently asked questions
What waste percentage should I use?
It depends on the tile size, room shapes and laying pattern; many cuts and diagonal laying increase it. Enter the percentage you use on your projects.
How many 60×60 tiles are in a square metre?
One tile is 0.36 m², so a square metre needs 1 ÷ 0.36 = 2.78 tiles before waste.
How many square metres are in a box?
The default is 1.44 m² per box; the real figure is printed on the pack and varies by size and manufacturer.
